    Oh, that’s a fun one! Our four year old asked recently and we basically told him the truth. And he laughed and laughed and laughed.

      Yeah I went for age appropriate truth that was a little vague on details. If she kept pressing for details (she is in her ‘why?’ era) I was going to go hardcore scientific (eg ‘combine genetic material’). But fortunately she accepted my first answer
